TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN CARBON DIOXIDE CAPTURE

Physical Absorption

In recent years, FERRARI & CARENA has designed and built two plants characterized by a strong innovative component in both environmental and process fields. The design has focused particularly on selecting materials with CO2-absorbing properties that are environmentally friendly and safe for operators' health. The process has been developed with an emphasis on low energy consumption and ease of construction and management.

The first plant is used in the treatment of biogas for biomethane production. The chosen technology involves the physical absorption of CO2 into a liquid phase. The absorbent liquid, which is non-toxic and readily available, was selected for its affinity with carbon dioxide and its significantly lower ability to solubilize other gases, such as methane. The process innovation lies in the moderate operating pressures and, during the CO2 release phase, the multi-stage expansion for recovering the fraction of absorbed methane. The plant ensures the production of biomethane that meets the quality standards established by GSE for grid injection.

Absorption Chemical

The second type of plant involves the chemical absorption of carbon dioxide onto a granular solid material.

The absorbent material has high selectivity for CO2 and can also be used to absorb carbon dioxide present in the air.

The technological challenge that FC has addressed relates to the desorption process and achieving food-grade purity of the gas.

The plant manages the release at medium to high temperatures in an air-free environment, with internal furnace pressure generated by the released gas. The rotary drum furnace is heated by induction.
